The MusicXML file is the structured reference for the matching PDF. Pitch metrics compare note-name counts only; they do not score timing, duration, voices, lyrics, dynamics, or engraving.

What automatic notation can preserve

The score is reconstructed from MIDI pitch, note timing, velocity, tracks, tempo, and time signature. It cannot recover source information that the MIDI does not contain.
Lyrics, articulations, dynamics, fingering, voice labels, and complex ornaments are only retained when equivalent data exists in the source MIDI.
Rubato, swing, very short notes, and unquantized performances can require cleanup in the piano roll or a dedicated notation app.
PDF is an automatically engraved draft. Choose MusicXML when you need continued proofreading and editing.
